PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project aims to establish a standard for video-based education tailored to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), addressing their unique learning needs. Focused on BINUS University’s Digital Design Production (DDP) course, it introduces motion graphic materials designed with therapeutic features such as customizable visuals, narration, and pacing. These features cater to ASD students’ varying sensitivities and preferences, enabling better comprehension and engagement while fostering critical skills like digital fluency and creative thinking. This Project was led by Candy Reggi Sonia.
The project involves a multidisciplinary collaboration among experts in psychology, design, technology, and education. By leveraging research, structured interviews, and pilot testing with ASD students, the materials are designed to be inclusive and adaptable, ensuring effective learning outcomes. The initiative aims to set a benchmark for integrating therapeutic visual and auditory elements into educational content, creating a learning environment that supports ASD students in achieving their full potential.
Beyond the classroom, the project aspires to share these motion graphics non-commercially through BINUS online platforms, benefiting educators and institutions worldwide. By creating a scalable and inclusive standard for video-based education, this initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promotes equity in education. It also opens opportunities for further research and collaboration, ensuring long-term impact on ASD education.

Challenges
Creating a platform like BRIDGE, which aims to connect academia, industry, government, and society, comes with a unique set of challenges. Here are some of the most prominent challenges:
Understanding the Needs of ASD Students
Designing materials that effectively address the diverse learning needs, sensitivities, and preferences of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be complex and requires a deep understanding of their unique challenges.
Customizing Motion Graphics
Developing animations with therapeutic features, such as customizable visuals, narration, and pacing, involves balancing technical capabilities with the specific requirements of ASD students
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Coordinating input from experts across various fields, including psychology, design, education, and technology, requires effective communication and alignment of goals to ensure the project’s coherence.
Data Collection and Analysis
Gathering and analyzing accurate, relevant data from ASD students and stakeholders is critical but can be time-intensive and logistically challenging.
Limited Existing Standards
The lack of established guidelines for creating video-based educational materials for ASD students means the project must innovate while maintaining pedagogical effectiveness and inclusivity.
Solutions
To address these challenges effectively, we designed and implemented a series of targeted strategies aimed at overcoming obstacles, meeting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring the success and sustainability of the platform. These strategies included:
Engaged Experts and Gathered Student Feedback
Collaborated with ASD specialists, educators, and psychologists to understand the unique learning needs of ASD students. Conducted focus groups, interviews, and observational studies to gather insights. Piloted the materials with ASD students and incorporated their feedback into iterative improvements to ensure the learning materials effectively addressed their diverse preferences and sensitivities.
Designed Adaptive and Therapeutic Motion Graphics
Created motion graphics with features that could be customized by the user, such as adjustable visuals, text, narration, and pacing. Integrated therapeutic design principles, including calming color schemes, structured layouts, and predictable transitions, to provide a learning experience tailored to ASD students’ individual needs and comfort levels.
Fostered Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Defined clear roles and responsibilities for team members across psychology, design, education, and technology. Established regular communication channels, collaborative tools, and shared goals to ensure alignment and smooth teamwork. Leveraged expertise from diverse fields to create a holistic solution for ASD education.
Streamlined Data Collection and Analysis
Implemented a structured framework for data collection with ethical guidelines and standardized tools to ensure reliable results. Used digital platforms for surveys, analytics, and visualization to make the data collection process efficient and insightful. This data informed the development of materials that addressed the real needs and challenges faced by ASD students.
Innovated and Established New Standards
Adapted best practices from related fields of inclusive education and therapeutic design while innovating to create video-based education tailored to ASD students. Conducted pilot programs and collaborative benchmarking with other institutions to validate these approaches, laying the groundwork for standardized methods widely adopted for ASD-focused learning materials.
